One of the things I decided to do after my spill in the Japanese alps was to change out my summer gloves from O’Neil Moto-X gloves to items with greater protection.

I wanted a summer glove still but with more chance of saving my hands in  fall. After reading some reviews I went with the Dainese Guanto gloves hoping to get a high quality product with this famous brand.

These are a leather glove with some spandex portions and some perforated area and offer a compromise between venting and strength with reinforced areas on the palm, rear of fingers and knuckle.

On the road I would agree with reviews, they do ventilate much better than you would expect by looking at them. Not super free flowing like mesh gloves but in a different class. However I do not find them as comfortable as other reviewers have. I hope this will improve with wear. The sizing at least seems correct.

I got these in December  on close out from a USA web dealer very well priced.

Update one. I still find them not very comfortable.  The problem is the way the fingers are constructed with the seams at the side of your fingers bunching up and annoying you by 1/2 way into a ride.

Update two. Well these are going to be retired after little use as they are simply too uncomfortable. Really poor design, made like cheap builders gloves you would buy at DIY shop.

Final update. Can’t sell used gloves so I threw them out in the end and have not much confidence to buy anything else from Dainese. Really crappy.

  1. I've been using Alpinestars SP-X gloves for about a year now. I got a small(ish) size because I hate having half an inch of glove hanging off the end of my fingers and thumbs. They're a little tight to get on in summer (because my hands swell a little) but they're a very breezy glove but seem to proved a lot of protection: Kevlar kunckles, and a padded section on the outside palm.
They're a short glove, not a full gauntlet, too.
I'll definitely be getting another set if/when my old pair wear away – but there's no sign of that happening yet.

  2. They look pretty chunky, I hope they ware in ok for you. I've been looking for a good pair of summer gloves for 3 years now and bought a pair of Joe Rocket Pheonix 3 gloves about a month or two ago, they are great and at $39 on special cheap too. http://www.bikegearwarehouse.com.au/motorcycle-gear/Joe_Rocket_Mens_Textile_Motorcycle_Glove/motorcycle-gear-joe-rocket-mens-phoenix-3-0-gloves

  3. Unfortunately I am still not riding Stuart but I think they will be ok, they are 'chunkier' as you put it than a summer glove, almost like a short race glove, but they ventilate reasonably well – not a bad effort by Dainese.

Those Joe Rockets look good value, I have a pair something similar from a few years back that I sometimes use on very hot days, very high venting gloves.

  4. I have purchased a good number of items from Alpinestars over the years NHRN. I like their retro designs a lot.

I appreciate their assistance provided with the shoe problems I had and it's not because those shoes had quality control issues and never worked, I have experienced the same with my pair of Joe Rocket boots. No its more that other brand items I have recently purchased work better. Their Raven gloves were horrible, the thumbs were too small, I gave them away. Their 'totally waterproof' 'winter' jacket I purchased for my euro ride has a non waterproof front zipper, no outer storm flap and a tiny almost non existent inner wind flap so the cold air and water can enter with ease. Looks great but practical design is poor and the zipper is very weak having given me trouble within first week of use.

No it has taken a while but I just won't let myself buy anymore Alpinestars gear. I was going to get the zipper on my leather Astars jacket replaced when it broke end of last winter but I have since decided to just replace it with a jacket from someone else.
